Afraid to sleep. Is it apnea?

Post a new topicby treeman on Tue Nov 13, 2007 5:28 am

Hi,

I just came across this forum and have a question. I usually wake up feeling pretty well rested so I'm not sure if I have apnea or or it is signficiant. My wife tells me that she hears me stop breathing several times when I am sleeping. I have had several terrrifying situations where I wake up and can't breathe. My airway is shut. I gasp trying to get air (cannot inhale), swallow lots of air in my stomach and feel stomach acid. This goes on for 20-30 seconds until my airway finally opens. I then have a terrible pain in my chest and am afraid to back to sleep in case it happens again or my airway won't open. I haven't had an episode for over 6 months then just had one where I couldn't breathe for almost 40 seconds. I'm active and do not consider myself overwieght ( 6'1" and 200 lbs). Has anyone had similar situations and what did you do to correct it?

hi ive just read your post and i know what that feels like to be afraid to go to sleep i was like this for about 2 years .wondering wether i would wake up in a morrning i did not know how bad i was untill my wife told me she had enough of me stopping breathing and to do some thing about it so i went to the doctors . that was a laff he told me i had been having panic attacks and put me on tablets nothing changed still jumping out of bed at all times of the night trying to catch my breath and getting worse.
anothere 2 years on felling more tyred and more missreble i could not take any more i finily went back to the doctors.he finally sent me for some tests and it was recognised i am suffering from sleep apnioa.
i have been wearing a breething mask for about 5 months now an im feeling 90 per cent better .

sounds like acid reflux. do not eat past 5pm and have tums on hand. I take protonix when i overeat and it really helps. throat might be closing up from acid
