STAGE 4 LUNG CANCER

Post a new topicby concerned_daughter on Sat Dec 05, 2009 1:30 pm

My dad went to the doctor on Monday this week with back pain. He was admitted in to the hospital that night and tons of test were run. We have now been told that he has stage 4 lung cancer It has spread to his brain, spine, liver, and bones. They said without treatment he would live less than a month. With radiation it would be less than 4 months, but chemo would most likely give him 6 months. Is there anything that can rise his chances in beating this? After they told him this he has completely gave up hope. I keep telling him doctors aren't always right, theyjust have to tell you what will most likely happen. It doesn't mean that's what will happen. I have been praying so hard this whole week. Is there any hope? We didn't know he had lung cancer at all. How fast does it spread to the brian and spine? How long has he probably had this? Please someone try and answer. I am at a loss and so scared. He is only 44 and I am not ready to say goodbye. Please help us.

Prepared or not you both have a sizable situation to deal with. You did not say what sort of lung cancer he has and that does make some difference. Still stage 4 is fairly advanced and it will take some aggressive approaches to tackle even the most treatable forms of lung cancer. Contact one of the Cancer Treatment Centers of America and relate your situation.

In the worst case scenario do take advantage of hospice and palliative care medicine. We will all pass some day, some sooner, some later. You dad may be facing his demise sooner than anyone wanted. Hospice can help with every aspect of that passage including the help you and other family members will need in coming to grips with the circumstances.

I am sorry to learn of your situation and I wish you and your father all the best in the trying times you both now face.
