Risk Factors

Open-angle glaucoma can develop in anyone and it occurs most often in people over the age of 40. Many factors can increase the risk:

African American
Corticosteroid use on a regular, long-term basis
Diabetes
Family history of glaucoma
High blood pressure (hypertension)
High intraocular pressure in one or both eyes
Myopia (nearsightedness)
Other eye disorders (e.g., uveitis, exfoliation syndrome, tumor, lens dislocation)
