Diverticulitis/ Diverticular Disease

Extremely concerned, Just met with my doc who is telling me to do the colon resection surgery to alleviate my 10 year on/off again bout with diverticulitus [diverticulitis]. I have had this thing since I was 20 years old. Any major concerns I should expect with the surgery? Is the healing process easy? I am looking forward to getting better however what is the procedure like? Any and all expierences are appreciated.
