Cystic Fibrosis

Post a new topicby Guest on Mon Apr 29, 2002 9:23 pm

When my daughter had her newborn testing done she was in the abnormal range for Cystic Fibrosis The retest had the same results. Her sweat test came up negative. Could my daughter's abnormal results from the blood tests mean that my husband and I could be carriers? Or were her results just a fluke? Should my husband and I be worried that we are carriers of the CF gene and could give our next child Cystic Fibrosis?

While it is encouraging that the sweat test was negative, it should be repeated. In addition, rarely patients with CF will have a negative sweat test. Genetic testing can be done by swabbing the inside of the cheek. This is a good test and should be considered in your daughter. It is also a good test to see if you or your husband are carriers.

Other causes of a positive newborn screen should also be considered and discussed with a gastroenterologist.

Thank you for your response. I am going to request to have the genetic testing done so I know whether to have another child or not.

Also, what are some of the other possible causes of a positive newborn screen that you mentioned? Our family doctor didn't seem at all worried that our daughter had abnormal results but I haven't been completely satisifed with his care. Especially if my daughter has something that we could have known about 2 years ago.

Anything that can cause reduced activity of the pancreas can usually give this result. This could be things like CF or some blockage preventing the pancreas from working properly. It is hard to know if these apply to your child but further evaluation may be needed if any other problems occur.
