Cystic Fibrosis in teens

Post a new topicby granmom on Thu Feb 28, 2008 4:12 pm

My sixteen year old granddaughter was just tested for CF and they did the sweat test. She tested high levels in this test. My question is how accuate is this test and what test will they need now. I don't know of anyone in my family who has or has had this and I read you must both be carriers. She hasn't had any problems until just i nthe last six months. She is now losing weight and is very thin. She is very involved in cheerleading and gymnastics. She is very active and eats well. If she does have CF how mild can this be.

They should repeat the sweat test to be certain of the results. They can also analyze her genetic makeup and see if it corroborates the diagnosis. Yes, CF can be diagnosed in the teens. The severity of the disease varies and it is not always evident early in life. It can sometimes not be recognized until adulthood. If the diagnosis is correct how much it will effect her remains an unknown. CF is one of the most common genetically related diseases and there are a lot of support groups and information available. Good luck to you both.

I believe they did two sweat test and also a DNA. We haven't gotten the results of this yet. In the past month they have done most of the other tests they do for this illness. She continues to loss weight. There haven not been any CF in our family that I am aware of. Thank you for answering my question. I am still in shock and looking to find out all I can so I can help my GD.
