extreme pain from callous

Post a new topicby Guest on Sat Sep 07, 2002 1:28 am

I have seen a doctor for years about the callous on the bottom of my foot. He recently measured the callous, which is now about 3mm x 3mm. I used to go to him about once every 8 weeks. He would remove the callous and remove a core growing on the inside of the callous. I now see him about every 3 weeks, because it has become very painful. He doesn't want to do surgery, because of a low success rate with this problem. I am now wondering what will happen when it is down to every week, or worse, what if it doesn't get better at all. I hate to think of surgery too, but I live in almost constant pain. I feel like I walk on a piece of cut glass about every two weeks of a month. He tried putting acid in the core, but that too failed. I am well aware of leg pain from walking with curled toes to prevent pressure, and I cannot stand the pain much longer. I asked him if there were some type of shot he could inject to relieve the pain, and he said no. There was a shot which he said would put silicone into the foot to form a pad, but that is now against the law. Where do I go from here? He said that 1/2 of the people get the same problem within 6 months of the surgery. I can't go on like this, but I have no idea what can be done. Any suggestions?

Have you tried any orthotic or arch supports to offload the pressure to this area? Your foot doctor can make you a custom device with a cut out for this area. Orthotics or shoe inserts are made very thin now to fit in almost any shoe. Depending on where the lesion is there can be a cut out or depression there to offload. These lesions are caused by too much pressure. Orthotics can redistribute pressure and change the way you walk. Also, there are urea creams that can be applied daily. Urea breaks down thick skin. An over the counter urea cream is Kerasal that can be found at Walmart. Or your foot doctor can write you a prescription. I hope this helps!!
