Stage 4 Colon Cancer - Confused about what happens next

Post a new topicby bdalton2008 on Mon Nov 03, 2008 4:32 pm

Good Afternoon.

My friend was told about a month ago she had stage 4 colon cancer with mets to her liver and possibly the lungs. She also had 2 huge cycst on her ovaries. She went in to surgery last Friday (Oct 31st) for a colon resection & a hysterectomy. When all was said and done, the colon resection was successful without a colostamy and the hysterectomy was also successful. The doctor also told her that the liver did not look lumpy as they expected but rather smooth and he felt it could be treated with chemo Then she told me she was told there was no lymph node involvement. Now, I'm confused and I need someone to clarify something for me. Can cancer travel to other organs without the lymph nodes being involved? Can the liver have cancer if the lymph nodes don't? Can someone please clarify this for me? I'm thinking, maybe what they saw in her liver is not cancer but something else (like fatty liver). When I asked her what the Doctor told her about her lungs she said the Doctor wasn't really concerned with her lungs. I'm so confused. Can someone please clarify all this for me??

Thank you so much.
