Bunion Surgery & Recovery

Post a new topicby Guest on Sun Jan 20, 2002 12:05 am

I had surgery on both feet on the 17th of January, 8:00 am, in Fresno, CA. Both feet had to have surgical breaks of the metatarsal, or however it is spelled. My question is this. What is the "typical" time of recovery and is this type of surgery proven clinically to withstand its severity ?? ie. breaking the metatarsal, wire fixation, etc. Is it a successful type of surgery. I am anxious to talk to you about this. Thanks.

The surgery is very successful with only minor complications typically. Normally, people walk in a surgical shoe for 2-3 weeks and then start wearing sneakers. The bone takes about six weeks to heal completely so do not expect to to return to full activities for about 6-8 weeks. I must stress that every patient heals differently and each surgeon has different post-operative routines so these are only guidelines. I will be happy to answer any other questions so please write back if you have any other concerns. Have a nice day.

My husband is 60 yrs old and broke his 5th Metatarsal 6 weeks ago. the doctor told him to stay off his foot for 6 weeks and then they would decide if they would operate. It has been 6 weeks and now the doctor is saying stay off his foot for another 4 weeks and then he will decide if he needs to operate. Is this the normal proceedure for a broken Metatarsal?

6 to 8 weeks is the normal healing time, so if it hasn't healed in 10 weeks then surgically fixing it would be an option
