Thalassemia

Post a new topicby Bostonion on Tue Aug 21, 2007 12:43 pm

Anyone heard of Thalassemia. It is a genetically inherited blood disorder. there are millions of carriers who are NOT aware of it and if both parents carry the thal(trait),their child risks a chance of inheriting the defective gene and might NOT be able to make his/her own blood

Yes, I have it. The trait that is. You need to do genetic testing when you marry someone. The only way to get the severe form of the disease is if both parents have the trait. I think the chance is then 25%. 50% chance they will have the trait and 25% they will not have thal

The only thing that has worked for me with the trait is to eat 3 x 2oz of lean beef per day.
There are also anemia groups online with yahoo. they are very helpful. they are not specific to

have your ferritin/iron levels checked too. they are different. i have low ferritin and low Hb/HCT.

Good luck!
